My Approach

As human beings, we have a fundamental need for expression and recognition.

Our need for safely opening up to other people may sometimes stay unmet due to loss or lack of safe emotional connections around us, either while growing up or as an adult.

Trauma, which is a subjective experience, can leave a profound impact on individuals as well on as their relationships. My approach at Mindscape counselling is to provide a supportive space for emotional healing to take place. I focus on delving deeper in understanding the roots and gaining insight into your experiences. Our work together will facilitate you to develop the tools needed for coping with current stressors, build strength and resillience to face similar challenges in the future, and find joy and peace in your life.

Change is a gradual process and our work will be collaborative where we join forces to attain holistic wellbeing.

I draw on EMDR, internal family systems, somatic and anti-oppressive approaches, based on the individual/couple's needs. I have specialized training in working with trauma, abuse and relationships. With couples, I utilize an amalgam of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Gottman Method and Internal Family Systems approaches. I also find humor as an essential element in my practice.

Academic & Clinical Experience

In practice, I have worked with diverse populations to support healing and growth.

I actively work in community-based crisis counselling and mental health support using a client-centred and trauma-informed approach. I have completed training in several modalities including Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Integrated Trauma & Attachment Treatment Model (ITATM), Cognitive Processing Therapy ( most often utilized with folks with PTSD) and more.

I have also completed a 5 week training in Drama Therapy by a licensed drama therapist, as well as Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) which is the gold standard for effective risk assessment and possible prevention to suicide.

My credentials include a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, MSc. in Organizational Psychology and bachelors in Psychology.

My experience primarily revolves around working with trauma/abuse, substance use, relationship anxiety, challenges associated with personality diagnoses (bipolar, borderline, narcissistic), and difficulties related to emotions and thoughts. I also work with individuals who hear voices and understand that there are varying levels of normal which may or may not align with the societal expectations. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

I currently offer services online through video sessions.

My availability is during weekday evenings (Mon & Thurs 5pm to 7pm), and during the day on weekends. If there are specific times/days you are looking for that may not be available in my calender, please feel free to drop an email at fizzah@mindscapecounselling.ca
